Sorry this update is so late in coming!
First of all, a huge thank you to the Water Protectors who came out to speak in favor of divestment. It helped us give a really powerful presentation. The Human Rights Commission already had a full agenda and was not able to discuss our ordinance; however, we heard later that they have already asked city staff to start looking into the logistics of divestment. Sustainability Commission was able to spend a few minutes discussing the proposal. While supportive of the idea, they were unsure of the role they could take to support us, as they themselves have not gone through the process of presenting an ordinance to city council before. They decided to wait for more information from city staff before taking further action, but expressed interest in joining with the Human Right’s Commission to create a divestment sub-committee.
We will be back at the commission meetings this Tuesday and Wednesday, where they are planning to discuss our ordinance!
